Another year, another birthday.

This one has brought a period of introspection with it. Sixty five years old; who would have thought it?

I’ve come to realise I’m in the latter part of my writing career now, such as it is. I’m probably never going to get the big book deal, the Hollywood movie, my name in lights and a yacht to sail round the world. But you know what, I’m happy enough with what I’ve managed to achieve.

I’ve been full time for fifteen years, haven’t starved us, sold novels and novellas to some of the biggest publishers in the horror genre, had over a hundred pro-rate short story sales and seen my stories in a wide variety of anthologies and magazines. If you’d told me I’d have all that when I was starting out more than thirty years ago now, I’d have sold my soul for it.

The late career switch into mostly writing creature features has been a bit unexpected, but lucrative, and means I’m not finished yet. I’ve got a new S-Squad, OPERATION: NORTH POLE in the works, and I’ve got a second SEA HUNTERS to write. I can see both series continue to stretch into the years ahead, as long as my mind and body hold out.

I’m also not quite done with supernatural fiction. I’ve got a Scottish collection out on sub, and a request to write another one in hand. Anthology invitations have dried up somewhat, and I don’t have the energy to seek out open calls that I used to have, so that side of things has definitely fallen off.

But I’m still here, still writing, I’ve just got to push past the thought that I’m also now an old age pensioner, and get on with it. 🙂

Onward and upward, to infinity and beyond.

  1. Happy Birthday, Willie! I hope you have a wonderful day. As you are Scottish, will you be combining your birthday celebrations with a Burns Supper?
